ANIME VS CARTOON/ANIMATION

First of all let use differentiate between the term as many often confused between CARTOON/ANIMATION with ANIME;
ANIME = Animation produce in Japan, or by Japanese Studios.
CARTOON/ANIMATION = Produce elsewhere other than Japan & often is from Western country.

I’ve watch cartoons & anime throughout for nearly 2 decade and ¾ of my life. ANIME & CARTOON is 2 different Thing; both originated from 2 entirely different concepts and were easily differentiable, the moment you glance on it. Sadly, most who not accustom to anime often categorize it with cartoons which mainly produce from western country.

Anime being originated from Japan isn’t just some cartoon that aims towards younger audience, like what most cartoons meant to be. Anime plays a very important role in educating, sharing knowledge; pass down the culture & teaching, as well as brain washing.

Cartoon commonly suffered one problem; it is like going around a merry-go-round where the theme is “Save the world!!” & the genre is more towards “Heroic”. Japanese were smart, rather than competing on the same level, they come out with brighter idea as to produce variables of Genre & theme making Anime more attractive and suitable for various age group & level.

When Disney thought they have monopolize the world with Mickey Mouse & His Friends, Japanese come out with the Mouse’s mortal enemy, KITTY CAT~! Nyaaa~!! Then Marvel thought they can brain wash the younger children mind with superheroes like Superman where some Aliens trying to take over earth & Superman stand to defend earth, Sunrise introduce Keroro Gunso (Sergeant Keroro). Imagine a group of frog species is trying to take over earth & end up working as a Maid in a human house.

What I’m trying to say is that anime comes with various genres & countless of story plots which is unique by their own to cater to various taste & demands of audience. Japanese are bunch of fellas who use their brain too much... really... anything under the sun, they turn into anime or manga. You named it, you got it~!

Baseball? Try H2. Like Boxing? Try Ashita no Joe. Or you like something like circuses? Kaleido Star. You like cars? Initial D takes you for a ride of your life. Love Ice skating? Ginban Kaleidoscope takes you go skiing. You love fishing? Grander Musashi.

Or you felt hungry, want some recipe? Cooking Master Boy. Or you love chess... there’s Hikaru no Go or perhaps something related but in the form of action then try Marchen Awakens Romance. Ok, perhaps you’re lonely & you wish you still have your barbies with you & always dreamt that they can always speaks to you, consider Rozen Maiden.

Ever wonder how police does their job? You’re Under Arrest. Love Gondolas but never got the chance to visit Venice? Try ARIA the ANIMATION & you'll be amazed by it's artwork. Ever wish to be a librarian? Kokoro Library. Love fairy tales? Fairy Musketeer Akazukin have it all, from snow white to red riding hood. Ever wonder the hardship of taking care of a baby? Daa! Daa! Daa!. Ever wish your Laptop to be more mobile & comes with more functions? Chobits comes with multipurpose super mobile pc. *Fragile! Handle with care*

Anime often comes with very dramatic story plots & often pack with good animation qualities with some with great CGI like anime production from GONZO such as Kiddy Grade. Tears jerking & heart piercing series like She, The Ultimate Weapon, ef ~A tales of Memories~, H2O, & True Tears which is quite a trend these days. Some were very dark & extreme such as the ever famous SCHOOL DAYS in their plot, exploring the dark side of romance yet very down to earth. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, is an ingenious anime heavily guided with complicated & detective like story yet filled with gores & blood.

Most people consider anime are for kids, but that is simply stereotyping! Anime is produce to cater wide range of people of different taste & interest. Love Politics? Well Code Geass from Sunrise is a hit. Anime like Spice & Wolf is one of its kinds that talks about merchant/traders during the old times where barter still exist. Some anime like Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha may first appear to be some Fairy tales transformation series for kids but “never judge the book by the cover” for this anime is not your common stereotyping logics tells you. It is highly boost with detail battle scenes with magnificently crafted weaponries.

Not to mention there were also modification of cartoon into anime such as the ever famous city destroyer, Powerpuff girls. Anime version? Powerpuff girl Z, but rather than concentrating on aggression & abusing animals, Anime takes the gentle path to educate the younger generation of children to be more gentle as the anime ver. Were aggression-free. No more city getting destroyed, & poor monkey being punch & kicked around.

The storY of X-men where mutant trying to find their place in the human world is quite similar with an anime, Elfen Lied. No doubt, X-men is concentrate more on the actions while Elfen Lied is more towards the story plot, although the actions were several times more gory than X-men. Elfen Lied is definitely not suitable for younger viewers.

Well, sue me... but I have always loved Batman. Yes, the Dark Knight... Japanese call it Ninjas, & they bring it into another level producing the world hit anime NARUTO but still my heart is always have been Batman. So hey... not all cartoons are bad~! But the moment you make comparison you can immediately feel the distinct differences.

Anime is capable in inflicting various emotions such as sympathy, & brought about tears jerking moments in which cartoon often failed to do so. Anime brings about plenty of other economic ventures like comics which are known as Manga in Japan, as well as various merchandise ranging from pillow cover to your car sticker.

Not only that, anime often comes with very well compose BGM, soundtrack, & pumped with great singers & voice actress. Hence Music albums, singles, OST, & etc. Were selling like hot cakes & usually this help makes the anime even better. Unlike cartoons in which songs were often lame or meaningless, anime often comes with great songs & lyrics. The Hit series ef ~a tales of memories~ & Lucky Star is a good example in this case.

So who win? Definitely it has to be ANIME, no matter what it pawns Cartoon in every sense.

POLICE FORCE VS CITIZEN'S THOUGHTS

.
Be it shine or rain, in their shining black sunglasses & Boots, small cap, white gloves, they drench in sweat and dirt while smiling and waving at you in the streets. Many occasions their boots is flooded with rain water, and drench with polluted city rain. The sun and rain never show mercy upon these people, and most of them suffered plenty of sun burn enough for their skin to immune to it. Some of them have pot bellies, not because they’re lazy but they work so hard they could hardly have time to workout or exercise to keep fit.

Furthermore, during PUASA MONTH they sacrifice their lunch time and work for sake of others with an empty stomach. When people are celebrating their public holidays, they maintain the conditions of the roads and patrol around the city to keep public peace. For some their pay is lower than a sale promoter yet they work hard for the sake of others. There’re times when they have to leave their families to replace the insufficient man power in other states. No matter what is the outcomes whether they support DAP or BN, they have to maintain neutral.

They constantly found themselves ‘yamcha’ with death god unwillingly and carry a high risk of danger. Most of the time they sweat enough to at par with how much they drink. When we see them chasing after Mat Rempits, we are at ease and relax. When we see them chasing snatch thieves, we’re glad and happy. When we have them by our side, we felt safe and secured (Although, for some they may disagree for reasons I think best you keep to yourself =P).

When we shout for help, they rush to our aid immediately even when they’re in the toilet doing their business or just applied the soap or shampoo in the bath tub. Many times they risk their life by rushing into dashing vehicles to stop them with their red flags to maintain a proper traffic rules. Sometimes they have to go for diet so they can hide behind the poles to catch traffic offenders. Sometimes, they found themselves stuck in a small “pondok” at the side of the highway under the blazing sun light equip with nothing but a small hand fan and a camera.

However, more than often we take them for granted. Many occasions when we stuck in traffic jam, we push all the blame to them despite their effort in controlling the traffic. When they just trying to rest after a long hard work in the kopitiam, we say them ‘curi tulang’. When they stuck in their station dealing with endless paper work and complain, we say they’re lazy to make their round. For some they have a sour day and may suffered a bad mood (They’re human after all) but when we confront them in the station at the counter, we accuse them of being impolite and rude with added bonus of sue case or complain filing.

Little do we know, for some of us we come to look down on them. Many view them as ‘Tak Boleh Harap’ and some were even disgusted to look at them. When they are summoned to wear the badge “Saya Anti Rasuah” we say ‘What the use? Look nice nia, but when we give angpow they still take.’ Furthermore, some rather turn to their friends or other alternatives when they need help rather than them who actually able to help us with not more than RM10.

When we wear our branded John Master, Pierre Cardin, and Crocodile shirts/pants/shoes to work, they only wear 1 brand which made in Malaysia. All come in either Dark Blue or Black or White or Yellow, with all same style. Most of them have to wear the same stuffs 7 days a week while we change our clothes everyday. While we drive in our Mercedes, BMW, and even Kancil. They challenge the sun and rain with their Ex5 Honda 100cc Motorbike. We grumble of carrying our laptop and books to campus due to their weight but we can benefits from them, but they have to carry batons, guns, & etc, that they themselves might never even have a chance to use it in their lifetime.

Last Monday when I ride through one of the major highway, I found 5 Whites and 2 Dark Blues doing their usual roadblock under the merciless blazing steaming sun. After safely pass through them, I ride to the nearest petrol station to purchase 7 Mineral Water and rode back to them and distribute to them. I hope it can keep them from dehydrated, so now that I think of it… most of us take them for granted. Those who drives, perhaps you might want to prepare some mineral waters in your cars. Is the least we can do to show that we care, as a True Malaysian.

So who win this match?
You decide~!

KOPITIAM VS RESTAURANT

.
Kopitiam (Coffee Shop) is a very common sight in Malaysia (Singapore as well) no matter where you are! For me, “mamak tang” is categorized as Kopitiam as well. Not only does it provide shelters for the merciless rain shower common in Malaysia weather, Kopitiam also served a great deal of drinks and meals. Besides, getting a quick bite there becomes a common practice for us Malaysians be it Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, Tea, Hi-Tea, Dinner, Late-Dinner, Supper, Early Breakfast, & etc.

When comes to Kopitiam which often runs by Hawker stalls, best place to eat will be in Penang. The small little cute island on the northern of Malaysia where the finest Hawker Food served. Being labeled as Food paradise, most Penang Hawkers served at least decent meal and in a very cheap price as well. Take note that if you go to Gurney Drive to eat then you’re being scammed. The best hawker stalls for each and specific food is scattered around the island, you gotta run around if you wanted to eat the best specific food.

Below is some of the List of my favorites:
Char Kuey Teow – at the end of Siam Road in Georgetown, at the T junction beside a kopitiam. Usually open around 4pm onwards.
Koay Teow T’ng (Koay Teow Soup) – Air Itam Market, inside the newly build food court. Usually open for morning business only.
Penang Laksa – Just opposite of the Air Itam Food Court mentioned above. Somehow they open from morning till very late at night.

Best simply call me when you in Penang, and we can go around eating. Provided I’m in the island of course. (Currently stuck in KL) So one may pounder about dining in an Air-conditioned Restaurant versus Kopitiam so let’s look into it.

Price Factor,
Restaurant never failed to suck the blood of their customers with the additional 10-15% service charge and at least 5% Government Tax charge. Every time at the counter when I about to pay my bill in a restaurant, the scenery often change into the prosecution side where there’s a bucket just below me to receive my falling head the moment I heard the register counter “Ka-ching”. While eating in kopitiam, a simple cup of Black Coffee just cost you around RM1 but when you dine in a Restaurant, no doubt it’ll be triple or even more of that price. Nasi Lemak in Kopitiam RM1.20, while Nasi Lemak in Old Town restaurant is six times the price so enough say…

After all we just need to fill our stomach, so unless is a celebration or special occasion, going to restaurant is like asking Count Dracula to feed on me. I would have rather donate my ‘blood’ for other reasons. Long Live Kopitiam!!

Quality Factor,
Although Kopitiam mostly runs by Chinese Community but most Kopitiam these days served plenty of various cuisine such as Thais, Indians, Arabs, Taiwans, Singapores, and etc. Furthermore, many agree that food served in Kopitiam mostly better than restaurants. Common food like Char Kuey Teow and Nasi Lemak has been a debate forever between which is better but personally I prefer Kopitiam’s. Forget StarBucks! There’re plenty of Kopitiams that serve great coffees at 10 times cheaper than StarBucks.

Critics stressed that it may due to additional-unwanted-ingredients included in the food and drinks served in Kopitiam but as long as we don’t know and on denial, I believe we still satisfied. Besides, is not as if food served in Restaurant would capable of escaping the terrors of those creepy crawlers and their waste.

One may debate that restaurant is better for “Halal” reasons but I’ll say, what the heck… “Halal” Char Kuey Teow (CKT)? You gotta be kidding me!! This is perhaps the main reason why Restaurant’s CKT never beat the Hawkers.

Uniqueness Factor,
This is a difficult factor, kopitiam’s foods don’t come in decoration and usually they compete more on the taste rather than their appearances on the plate. Is not like as if we gonna eat the plates and those decorations, so what the hell do we need it for? Usually those unique food starts out as hawker and while receiving demands, they gradually grow into restaurants.

So if you want a unique food then you better hit the streets and stop searching through the nets. Hawkers work hard on improving their food rather than learning HTML to Market their stuffs in the nets!

Environment Factor,
Oh great, this is the only reason why I would choose to dine in Restaurants sometimes. Flies Flies Flies!!! This creepy hand shaker bug with big eyes is my worst enemies!! And they conquer every single Kopitiam in the world; they multiply like nobody’s business and never fail to bug me. They’re UGLY, Buzzy, Irritating, and always try to steal my food! So here you are… the part time job of most Hawkers will be spending time killing this freaking flies while most chef in the restaurant would have watch TV at their spare time in the kitchen.

Another thing to notice will be the improper drainage system in hawker stalls; you have to always watch your steps so you don’t get tripped and end up showing the other diners what they’ll only see in Blue Label Movies. There are even times where you can see children playing ‘ice-skating’ in the kopitiam, imagine how oily can the floor get.

Oh not to forget the heat, especially the afternoon sun can be really merciless and Kopitiam that equipped with only fans sometimes is not sufficient as the heat produce by the hawker stalls is equally deadly as well. So as you eat, you’ll realize that your meal may be a little salty thanks to your dripping sweat, especially Malaysians who Love Spicy Foods.

For animal lovers, BEWARE!! There’ll be times when cats and dogs storm Kopitiam to fill their growling stomach. How they do it? They attack our guilt and empathy by shining their sparking big sad eyes at us and as an added bonus a ‘meow…’ or ‘nyu…’ at you. The next thing you know? half of whatever in your plates or bowls will be shared with them. Only to realize that when you walk out the restaurant feeling the pathetic half filled stomach of yours.

Hygiene Factor,
Well, when it comes to kopitiam we always served with food with added ingredients that should not be included in the first place. However, we never really know so who cares? But sometimes we can’t help but to notices foreign objects in our bowls and plates. Hairs, bugs, ants, lizard dung, and etc. (You Name it) However it doesn’t mean the well furnished restaurants don’t have this added ingredients which is not in the menu as well. It just so happen that the chef takes the effort to take off the ‘visible’ to-the-naked-eye-extra-ingredients so we don't really see it but whatever the essences in that ingredients pretty much absorbed into our food or soup. Yummy~~

There's a saying "When you dine in a restaurant, never visit the kitchen." Sadly unlike restaurants where diners don’t really see through the kitchen, hawker stalls and how it operates is visible hence there’s higher tendency for us to critic of their hygiene environment.

I once dine in a restaurant and sat nearby to the small window where by I can see slightly peek into the kitchen. Imagine what I see? One of the chef spit on a plate and serve it out through the little window, I watch is horror and amaze how the poor targeted diner happily chow down his meal along with the ‘extra ingredients’. Of course, I’m not making a generalization that all chef does this but because most restaurant is a ‘close kitchen window’ which give the chef-in-grudge the opportunity to do so.

Argh~~! I cancelled my order and leave immediately without any reason. I recall the restaurant is somewhere in Klang Valley but is a one way ticket so I wouldn’t want to even remember the restaurant name. Sheesh~~

Business Hours,
Aside from Fast Food restaurants, most common restaurants close their shops at 10pm but Kopitiam is different. To cater Malaysian’s thirst for Football Fever, some kopitiam business start their business only at 6pm all the way to 6am. Besides, most Malaysian especially in states like Kuala Lumpur and Penang, people practically never sleeps. In Penang we call these zombies, Penang Nightingales.

In other words, Kopitiam owned Most Restaurants in these areas as they never failed to meet the demand of their customers when some of us would have been sleeping like a dead log at those hours.

Overall,
Kopitiam is the pride of us Malaysians; we never failed to visit it at least once in 3 days. For some, our daily meals depended on them. Penangites would have died without Kopitiams and that our life would never be perfect without them. Kopitiam is already part of our culture be it sub-culture or even counter-culture. Just accept it pal, Kopitiam is a necessity in our daily life and without their existence your life would have been empty.

Excluding the fact that we consume those ‘Unnecessary-extra-ingredients’ everyday thanks to the some creepy crawlers as well as the management style of the Hawkers, Many still live over 90 year old and can be seen playing Mahjong and spending their golden time idling in the Kopitiam. Besides, most of us would have prefer to ‘yamcha’ at Kopitiam don’t you agree?

Consider the price you pay and the quality of meal you received in the kopitiam, most would have agree that it is worth it. Besides, you can shout all you want and chat out loud and rarely people will pay attention on you unlike when you are in a restaurant.

So as a conclusion, Kopitiam is a necessity in the life of most Malaysians and their existence is crucial in keeping us alive. However, cutting down on our frequent visits there would be a wise choice. And if you wanted a romantic dinner with your soul mate, Kopitiam may not be your best choice unless both of you are Kopitiam Addict like me.

So who win this match?
KOPITIAM OF COURSE!!!
(At least can I slap the cook silly in the Hawker stall if i see him spit on my bowl...)
